The eighth issue of The First Experiment was created by students in Poetry Now, two Creative Composition sections of WR150, a writing and research seminar in Boston University’s College of Arts and Sciences Writing Program, during the Spring 2017 semester. Like other Arts Now courses, Poetry Now offers students the opportunity to engage with contemporary art both in and out of the classroom. Students read newly-published collections; write poems; attend poetry events on- and off-campus; and gain editorial experience.
The poems published in Issue 08 represent the students’ creative engagement with four books—Maggie Nelson's Jane and The Red Parts, Monica Ong's Silent Anatomies, and Claudia Rankine's Citizen—and often include research. Excerpts of a few students' final projects also appear here. All content was written and selected by the students, working in small editorial groups.
