The second issue of The First Experiment was created by students in Poetry Now, an experimental section of WR100, a writing seminar in Boston University’s College of Arts and Sciences Writing Program, during the Spring 2014 semester. Like other Arts Now courses, Poetry Now offers students the opportunity to engage with contemporary art both in and out of the classroom. Students read newly-published collections, attend poetry events on- and off-campus, talk to local and national poets and publishers, and gain editorial experience. This semester, students also composed one-of-a-kind valentine poems as a fundraiser for the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center.

The poems published in Issue 02 represent the students’ creative engagement with five books—Amaranth Borsuk’s Handiwork, Eduardo Corral’s Slow Lightning, Brian Foley's The Constitution, Anna Ross’s If a Storm, and Julia Story’s Post Moxie—and include ekphrastic poems, prose poems, sonnets, and erasures, among other forms. Students also engaged critically with the above collections, as well as poems published in current issues of other online journals. All content was written and selected by the students, working in small editorial groups.
